About Whrrl

Profile: Whrrl is a location-based social network (LBSN) that provides Amazon-like recommendations to users based on their check-in histories and interests. When a user checks in to a location with Whrrl, they are given the option of joining a virtual society based on that location. For instance, visiting a local taco stand might grant a user membership to the societies for that taco stand and “Yo Quiero Mexican”, a society for Mexican food lovers. The Whrrl platform then provides the user recommendations based on those society memberships (e.g. other local Mexican restaurants visited by society members). Consumers can upload recommendations and photos to their societies and share that information on Facebook and Twitter. Posting activity within a society rewards consumers with points and rewards that can unlock special promotions or prizes. The value proposition for consumers is one of hyper-relevant discovery. Unlike LBSNs like Foursquare and Gowalla, whose primary purpose is location-sharing among friends, Whrrl is designed specifically to facilitate discovery of new places and experiences based on an individual’s interests and activities.  The fact that Whrrl societies push specific recommendations toward consumers based on their interests and check-ins allows for deeper location-based engagements than the simple social check-ins of Foursquare and Gowalla.

Promotional Mechanisms: Whrrl gives companies the opportunity to offer specials and discounts to consumers for checking in at specific locations. These may be one-time discounts intended to increase new foot traffic or offers that are unlocked after a customer has checked in a particular number times aimed at rewarding loyalty. Whrrl facilitates the discovery of these promotions by prompting consumers in the vicinity of special offers nearby. Additionally, Whrrl offers brands the opportunity to create their own societies and offer society rewards directly to customers for engaging the brand via society membership.
